Cairns, Reef, and Rainforest Road Trip
The absolutely stunning natural beauty of Northern Queensland sets it apart from the rest of Australia. With the world’s oldest living tropical rainforest, the Daintree Rainforest, and the Great Barrier Reef stretching along the coast, this is the only place on earth where two World Heritage areas exist side by side. Experience the wonder yourself with this self-drive trip taking you from Cairns through Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation and back in under a week.
Day 1 – Cairns to Port Douglas (37 miles, 60 km)
Your northern Queensland vacation begins in Cairns after picking up your rental car at the Cairns Airport depot or Cairns City depot. Travel along the scenic Captain Cook Highway and wind your way along the coast to the resort town of Port Douglas, a great base from which to take a cruise to the reef. Take a day cruise to the Great Barrier Reef or discover Port Douglas’ seaside charm - evident in its shops, galleries and historic buildings- or visit the seemingly endless stretch of sand on Four Mile Beach. Overnight in Port Douglas at the Mantra Heritage.
Day 2 – Port Douglas
The entire day is yours to explore Port Douglas or visit the reef. Get an in-depth look at the Great Barrier Reef on a day cruise and even try snorkeling, diving or sea kayaking. There are plenty of dry-land activities as well – play a round of golf, visit the seaside market, or simply relax on the beach before a pleasant dinner at one of the many fine restaurants on the harbourfront. Overnight in Port Douglas.
Day 3 – Port Douglas to Daintree Rainforest (30 miles, 50 km)
Drive north along the Captain Cook Highway to the Daintree Rainforest. Along the way you’ll pass the sugar cane fields of Mossman and you may consider a short detour to the spectacular Mossman Gorge. Following the signs directing you to Cape Tribulation you’ll reach the departure point for the ferry across the crocodile-infested Daintree River (don’t worry, you’ll be quite safe) to the Daintree World Heritage Rainforest – the world’s oldest living tropical rainforest. Overnight in Daintree at the Daintree Heritage Lodge.
Day 4 – Daintree to Cape Tribulation (13 miles, 20 km)
Today’s destination is Cape Tribulation and the tropical beaches lining the east coast of Queensland. Take the road to the Heights of Alexandra Lookout for spectacular views of the rainforest meeting the reef. Continue to the Daintree Discovery Centre and climb the canopy tower to experience the different levels of the dense rainforest. On your way to Cape Tribulation you’ll pass Cooper Creek where some of the rarest tropical plants and wildlife are found. Overnight in Cape Tribulation at the Ferntree Rainforest Lodge.
Day 5 – Cape Tribulation
With so much to do in Cape Tribulation, you’ll need every minute of this day to explore what is regarded as Australia’s most beautiful rainforest. Go on a rainforest walk, try mountain bikingm, or some exotic fruit tasting. Of course there’s always the Great Barrier Reef where you can go diving, snorkeling, cruising, or sea kayaking. Overnight in Cape Tribulation.
Day 6 – Cape Tribulation to Cairns (80 miles, 130 km)
This morning is your return journey to Cairns. Bid farewell to North Queensland’s tropical scenery as you travel south along the coast, passing by the towns of Mossman and Port Douglas. Your Australia package ends when you drop off your car rental at the airport or city depot in Cairns.
