Australian Outback National Parks Safari
This Australia vacation is one of our best ways to go on an Outback safari spending five days traveling to three different national parks, opal fields, lakes, and World Heritage sites. Leaving bustling Sydney behind, you’ll fly to Broken Hill and begin your adventure in the Aussie outback. Spend five days with expert guides exploring all there is to see before returning to metropolitan Melbourne Australia for your onward travels.
Day 1 – Sydney to Broken Hill
Your outback safari adventure begins today as you leave Sydney on Rex Airlines for your flight to Broken Hill (included). Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel and have time to explore this mining town in the middle of the Outback, which has become a haven for Australian artists, attracted to the area’s harsh beauty and reliable light. Overnight in Broken Hill
Day 2 – Mutawintji National Park and White Cliff Opal Fields
Today you leave Broken Hill for Mutawintji National Park to explore its history and inspect the many fine examples of Aboriginal art. Here the rugged Byngnano Range is dissected by colourful gorges, rockpools and creek beds lined with red gums. Scattered among the caves and overhangs are galleries of Aboriginal rock art and engravings. The park was returned to its traditional owners in 1998, and you may be lucky enough to hear stories of Dreamtime legends relating to the creation of the landscapes. After a picnic lunch, travel to White Cliffs Opal Field for overnight accommodation in the Underground Dug Out Motel.
Day 3 – Opal Fields and Broken Hill
Spend the morning exploring and learn why the locals live underground. Visit opal galleries and spend some time fossicking. Return to Broken Hill for overnight accommodation.
Day 4 – Kinchega National Park and Menindee Lakes
This morning travel to Kinchega National Park, a remarkable area of glittering lakes in a dry landscape -- with waterbirds living among its backwaters and drowned forests. Massive river red gums gather at the banks of the Darling River, which forms the eastern boundary of the park. After lunch visit the small town of Menindee and learn of the fate of the early explorers Burke and Wills. Overnight is in Menindee.
Day 5 – Mungo National Park and Willandra Lakes
Today journey further south to Mungo National Park traveling through the World Heritage area of the ancient Willandra Lakes. Mungo National Park has a lunar like landscape and a feature is the “Walls of China”. Breakfast and lunch included. In the afternoon continue south to Mildura for your late afternoon flight to Melbourne.
